Seems like controversy just follows ‘Squad’ member and avowed socialist Rep. Ilhan Omar around these days.
An apartment reportedly belonging to the Minnesota Democrat’s son was searched by Minneapolis police Tuesday night, although the alleged connection to the congresswoman’s family has not been independently confirmed.
Minnesota-based Alpha News, citing unidentified law enforcement sources, reported that officers executed a search warrant at a residence allegedly belonging to Omar’s son, Adnan, and seized firearms and ammunition.
Reporter Liz Collin also reported that police arrested Adnan’s roommate, 22-year-old Abdulrahman Abdi, during the operation.
Neither Omar nor her son has been accused of wrongdoing, and authorities have not publicly confirmed that the apartment belongs to Adnan.
The reported search followed a separate encounter involving Abdi earlier Tuesday.
Minneapolis police said officers stopped Abdi and cited him for allegedly driving without a valid license or proof of insurance.
Abdi was initially to be released at the scene while officers began the process of impounding the vehicle, according to police.
During that process, officers allegedly discovered a firearm inside the vehicle, an apparent development that preceded the reported search of the apartment later that evening.
Officers later tracked Abdi to an address on Marquette Avenue and arrested him “without incident,” according to the department.
Abdi was booked into the Hennepin County Jail on a weapons-related charge and released Wednesday night, according to jail records cited in published reports.
Court records reviewed by the Daily Mail reportedly show that the 22-year-old has accumulated 10 previous convictions, most of them involving misdemeanor offenses.
Last year, Abdi was convicted of speeding while driving with a license that had previously been revoked following an earlier offense.
His record also includes a 2024 felony conviction stemming from a high-speed incident in St. Paul. Police said Abdi drove a Jeep Grand Cherokee at speeds reaching 108 mph while traveling alongside a Dodge Durango.
Abdi ultimately pleaded guilty to fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle.
He was sentenced to one day in the Dakota County Jail and placed on supervised probation for two years, according to the sentencing order.
Abdi’s record also includes several other driving-related convictions dating back to 2022.
Those offenses include using a cellphone while behind the wheel, excessive speeding and failing to provide proof of insurance.
Meanwhile, a former Minnesota state trooper is challenging Omar in November, arguing that voters have grown “fed up” with government failures and are looking for a different approach.
John Nagel, a Republican and Minnesota native who spent three decades in law enforcement, said he believes his background gives him a unique perspective as he seeks to unseat Omar in Minnesota’s heavily Democratic 5th Congressional District.
In an interview with Fox News Digital, Nagel said his experience as a state trooper has given him firsthand insight into many of the issues affecting communities across Minnesota.
Nagel is attempting to position himself as an alternative to Omar, who has represented the district since 2019 and remains one of the most recognizable members of the progressive wing of the Democratic Party.
His campaign argues that concerns about public safety, government accountability and economic issues could reshape the race, despite the district’s strong Democratic voting history, Fox News reported.
“I think the people of Minnesota have been lied to. They’ve had their money stolen. They want to see somebody that’s going to come in and fix things,” Nagel said.
“They’re tired of being told the same old things,” Nagel added.
“I’m from Minnesota, born and raised here. I’m not a Washington plant,” Nagel said, pointing to his decades in law enforcement, work teaching defensive driving, and working in schools across the area.
